How to write ebooks? Where do I start?
Writing an ebook won't be easy, especially you want it to be a best seller, but it is not impossible. Just remember -
"Great Writers Are Made, Not Born".
I know what you are thinking right now. You are wondering what to write about?
Well don't worry. Each one of us is a living book and all you have to do is to look right under your nose.
Just write down the answers to the following questions:
- What is your area of expertise? Have you acquired any special body of knowledge from your job?
- What activities do you enjoy about your current job?
- Do you have any special talent that you pride yourself with?
- Any special Interest?
- Are you really good at something -like cooking, drawing, singing, playing an instrument, sports etc.?
- What kind of problems do you face in your day-to-day life? How do you solve them?
- What bugs you? What does not work? What is tedious?
The above list can go on and on. Just remember - the knowledge is within yourself, probably buried deep inside, you only have to dig it out. Ask yourself these questions again and again and make your list as big as possible.
Now that I have got the answers, what do I do next?
Simple, just pick the ideas that you love and that excites you the most. Yes, do what you love and the money will follow.
Found your topic? It's time to do some research now.
The key to writing a successful ebook is to find out what people want or need. After all you don't want to write an ebook that you cannot sell. Also you would have to identify your potential customers so that you can provide them with the information they desire. So, research is critical.
How do I find out what my potential customers want?
Here is how to do it:
- Visit an online discussion groups, forums, message boards, newsgroups on your chosen topic, browse through the posts and note down all the questions asked.
- Visit amazon.com and find out what is selling and what isn't because it is easy to sit down and write about something that fascinates you but it might be difficult to get people to buy it.
- Call your friends, ask your spouse, kids, parents or siblings or anyone else who can provide any information.
Your mission should be to find a topic that you know and like and yet is sellable.
TIPS: If you are struggling to find a topic, repeat the above steps by pretending that you are in a "five year ago" time wrap. Next, repeat for ten years ago and so on.

Finished deciding my topic, now how do I build my content?
After deciding on the topic, break it down into 10 - 15 areas. Each of these areas will represent a chapter. For example, if your ebook topic is "How to write ebooks" , you can break them into -
01. Introduction.
02. Why write an ebook?
03. Finding a profitable topic.
04. Content writing.
05. Deciding ebook format.
06. How to price your ebooks?
07. Designing covers for your ebooks.
08. E-commerce tools to sell your ebooks?
09. Developing a plan to market your ebooks.
10. Where to sell your ebooks?
Once you have created your chapter titles you can begin writing. You can also split each chapter into subchapters, for example, chapter 9 can be easily subdivided into -
9.1 E-book market places.
9.2 Search Engine marketing.
9.3 Pay per click advertising.
9.4 E-zine advertising.
9.5 Starting an affiliate program.
You can always take help from your friends, relatives and family members to develop your contents. Do some research; ask them questions about your topic. Find problems and try to solve them. Problems are a good source for ideas, because problems need solutions.
Points to be considered while writing:
- Organize your ebook well and make it easy for your readers to find relevant information quickly. Create a table of contents.
- Warm up your readers with a good introduction. Make your ebook un-putdownable by creating interest.
- Each chapter title should be a catchy one.
- Adopt a friendly casual style. Make your readers feel that you are talking to them and that you understand and care about their needs.
- Use easy to read fonts like Verdana, Arial, etc. Choose white background and black text.
- Write your text in small block and don't forget to leave plenty of white space between paragraphs.
- Make your ebook look professional by adding relevant pictures or diagrams, colored headlines, numbered lists or bullet points. Be careful not to over do this.
- If possible add tips or step-by-step instructional manual.
